ABUAD 2022 University’s shared Reviewed Climate Action Plan

After extensive consultations with local community groups and climate action partners, such as the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Government of Ekiti State; Triple G Eco-Revival Solutions; the Ekiti State Field Office of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, an environmental agency of the Federal Government of Nigeria; The Green Institute; and the ABUAD Green Club amongst others, ABUAD has released its Climate Change Action Plan. The Plan is a framework document that elaborates guidelines in our efforts to transition to renewable and low-carbon energy sources and to achieve net-zero carbon emissions before 2025.  The Plan defines the objectives and activities of the University as well as the axiological basis for achieving these targets.. In 2022, the University Climate Change Action Plan was reviewed with Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Government of Ekiti State; Triple G Eco-Revival Solutions; the Ekiti State Field Office of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, an environmental agency of the Federal Government of Nigeria; The Green Institute; and the ABUAD Green Club amongst others. This review of the University Climate Change Action Plan was consummated with a symposium to mark the World Environment Day 2022 tagged “Only One Earth”

The 2022 reviewed ABUAD Climate Change Action Plan contains an elaborate framework of targets, indicators and targets for cooperative planning for climate change disasters in partnership with key disaster response agencies and ministries of the Government of Nigeria and Ekiti State.  The 2022 reviewed plan builds on existing partnerships with the Ekiti State field Office of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, an environmental agency of the Federal Government of Nigeria; the Ekiti State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA); Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Government of Ekiti State; and the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (OSSAP-SDGs) amongst others.

During the 2022 review of the ABUAD Climate Change Action Plan, key areas of amendments were received from the 35 community leaders, ABUAD Board of Trustees and Governing Council Members, Alumni Body, 45 Students Representative Council Members, ABUAD Governing Council, ABUAD Management Staff, ABUAD Senate Council Members, 76 Faculty members, 43 Administrative Staff, 5 Non-Government Organizations, 8 Community-Based Organizations, 20 National Youth Service Corps Members and some climate change strategic partners from within Nigeria and across the frontier. The essence of this is to evaluate and monitor the level of performance of the plan with a view to ensuring it meets its intended purpose of providing a robust climate change action plan and framework that will be a living document outlining basic indicators, metrics and targets for informing and integrating campus climate resilience into ABUAD-wide climate framework for a robust planning.

ABUAD Makes Green History, Reviewed its Carbon Neutrality Policy and Plan for better Efficiency and Effectiveness

As part of its commitment to achieve a carbon neutral university campus by the year 2025,

In 2022, ABUAD reviewed its already developed and launched Energy and Utilities Sustainability Master Plan as a roadmap for achieving long-term goals and strategies that support the mission and vision of the University to enhance energy efficiency and conservation practices across all facilities, buildings, and campuses of ABUAD.

The 2022 reviewed ABUAD Energy and Utilities Sustainability Master Plan represents another most comprehensive commitments to climate action and carbon neutrality by any University in Nigeria. It sets the goal of achieving a 100% shift to electricity generated from renewable energy sources across ABUAD campus by 2025. It also contains an express commitment and pledge to lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in ABUAD by 95% by December 31, 2025, and to become a carbon neutral campus by the year 2025. The Plan has reiterated that the ABUAD Directorate of Works and Services must continue to provide “world class” energy services to support ABUAD as a top and fastest growing university in Nigeria.

While addressing faculty, staff and students at a review meeting held at the Office of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of ABUAD in the White Rock, the Chairman of the University Sustainability Committee and DVC (ARISP), Professor Damilola Olawuyi, SAN further re-emphasized that “This innovative Plan as reviewed establishes the framework for acceptable protocols, practices, and operational standards that is in tandem with the University’s Strategic Direction, focus on furthering academic excellence, create a positive communal impact, and foster innovation to positively impact social transformation. The reviewed Plan details strategic programs, activities and partnerships to guide sustainability planning, budgeting, operations, and all aspects of the University.  He appreciated all ABUAD partners, NGOs, CBOs, government institutions, and faculty members for their contributions in shaping the development and review of this plan and we look forward to more collaborative implementation”

The DVC (ARISP) paid tribute to the Chancellor and Founder of the University, Aare Afe Babalola SAN, OFR for his inspirational and transformational leadership and commitment to sustainability and climate action, without which the reviewing of the framework plan would not have been possible. He also commended the Vice Chancellor of ABUAD, Professor Smaranda Olarinde, FCArb, FCAI for the trust in the work of the Sustainability Office and Committee which has resulted in firstly, crystallization and now reviewing of the climate action and plan.
