2023 ABUAD Energy Efficiency Training and Provision of Clean Energy to Local Communities.

In 2023, Afe Babalola University (ABUAD) took impressive strides towards enhancing energy efficiency and sustainability in the local community and surrounding areas. This progressive institution went beyond its academic boundaries, actively engaging with local industries and residents. ABUAD provided direct access to its state-of-the-art Independent Power Plant (IPP) while hosting a variety of informative workshops and seminars designed to raise awareness about energy efficiency practices among community members.

At the heart of the ABUAD IPP project is a commitment to generating electricity that is both environmentally friendly and economically viable. This innovative facility harnesses a smart and diverse mix of energy sources. Remarkably, 61% of the electricity produced comes from renewable natural gas and hydro energy, ensuring minimal carbon emissions. The remaining 39% is generated from solar power, allowing ABUAD to capitalize on abundant sunlight to produce clean energy. This blend not only supports the campus but also extends its benefits to nearby communities, particularly those in Ado Ekiti.

One notable achievement in 2023 was the significant impact on the Ureje Community, which received essential energy services from ABUAD’s IPP. Additionally, neighboring communities such as Ago Aduloju Rural Community and Eriffun Community reaped the rewards of clean energy sourced from renewables in 2022. These initiatives reflect ABUAD’s deep-rooted commitment to corporate social responsibility and its alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, primarily focusing on ensuring access to affordable and clean energy.

Professor Modupe Adelabu articulated a comprehensive vision for the future of Ekiti State during a recent discussion concerning the government’s commitment to enhancing rural development. She emphasized the crucial role of Afe Babalola University (ABUAD) in this endeavor, highlighting the university’s dedication to collaborating with the state government to foster improvements in rural areas and uplift the quality of life experienced by their residents.
Prof. Adelabu poignantly pointed out that stable and clean electricity is fundamental to driving socio-economic development throughout the state. She expressed deep appreciation to Aare Afe Babalola, SAN—an esteemed lawyer and the visionary Founder and Chancellor of ABUAD—for his unwavering support and the substantial investment he has made in providing reliable power to the community. This gesture not only signifies a commitment to infrastructural development but also aligns with the broader objectives of the state government to mitigate the challenges posed by rural-urban migration.
Highlighting the multifaceted relationship between ABUAD and rural communities, Prof. Adelabu noted that the university’s initiatives in the Ureje, Ago Aduloju and Eriffun Communities are designed to complement the state government’s resolve to reverse the trend of urban drift by making rural life more appealing and sustainable. By addressing essential needs, such as reliable power, ABUAD is helping to instigate a paradigm shift in the perception and viability of rural living.
ABUAD’s commitment extends beyond this immediate goal. The university has proactively pledged to enhance vital infrastructure in these rural locales as part of a comprehensive strategy. This initiative is grounded in ABUAD’s energy efficiency and sustainability master plan—a detailed document that outlines a systematic approach to energy provision. The plan underwent an exhaustive review and update in 2023, ensuring its relevance and adaptability to the evolving circumstances and requirements of the communities it intends to serve.
The formal announcement of these significant developments took place during a vibrant inauguration ceremony for the Power Extension project. The event was marked by a palpable sense of excitement and optimism, with community members and stakeholders in attendance to witness the ceremony. Aare Afe Babalola, SAN, graced the occasion, along with Prof. Modupe Adelabu, representing the Ekiti State Governor, who shared in the celebration of this pivotal moment.
During the ceremony, they officially inaugurated the installation of three high-capacity transformers that will link ABUAD’s energy grid to the Ureje, Ago Aduloju, and Eriffun Communities. This infrastructural advancement is a monumental step toward ensuring that these communities gain access to a reliable and sustainable energy supply. The implications of this project are far-reaching, as it promises to significantly enhance living conditions, provide opportunities for new economic ventures, and foster local entrepreneurship. Moreover, the reliable energy access is a catalyst for educational initiatives, healthcare improvements, and overall community development, effectively laying the groundwork for a more prosperous future for the rural residents of Ekiti State.

Aare Afe Babalola,SAN (Founder/Chancellor, ABUAD), Yeye Aare Modupe Babalola (Wife of the Founder), Representative of the Vice Chancellor, Prof Sesan Fabamise

Aare Afe Babalola, SAN, the esteemed Founder and Chancellor of the Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), shared his heartfelt joy as he announced the university’s initiative to bring light to the Ureje, Ago Aduloju and Eriffun communities, areas that have suffered from prolonged darkness for many years. He pointed out the undeniable reality that it is often beyond the capabilities of the government to provide all the necessary basic infrastructure to the public.

In his remarks, Babalola expressed deep gratitude to the dedicated management staff of ABUAD and the hardworking members of the Directorate of Works and Services, whose commitment and efforts have enabled him to realize another one of his dreams: giving back to the communities that surround the university.

Furthermore, he highlighted the university’s ongoing contribution to the region by maintaining the government road that connects ABUAD with its surrounding communities, ensuring that residents have improved access and mobility. This initiative not only enhances the quality of life for the local inhabitants but also reinforces ABUAD’s commitment to community development and service.

Through the provision of reliable and clean energy, this innovative project seeks to significantly lower the electricity expenses faced by rural farmers and community members. On average, participants can expect a reduction of 25-30% in their monthly energy costs, particularly for those who currently depend on costly fossil fuel-powered generators. This shift not only alleviates financial burdens but also plays a crucial role in diminishing pollution and minimizing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions linked to energy consumption.

The university leader emphasized that the institution is dedicated to ongoing collaboration with the government to guarantee that communities in Ekiti enjoy a steady and uninterrupted power supply. This commitment not only enhances the quality of life for residents but also positions ABUAD as a frontrunner in realizing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By championing the cause for affordable and clean energy, the university is actively working towards a more sustainable and equitable future for local communities.
