The University has inaugurated its own Independent Power Plant (IPP) project aimed at generating lower-carbon, efficient and affordable electricity on campus and to surrounding local communities. In 2022, the project has continued to deliver a smart mix of electricity generation from Solar Power, Gas Turbines, Waste to Energy, Wind turbines and Ethanol Fuel. In further evaluation of the project in the year 2022, the project has continued to reduce the energy cost incurred by the University on electricity (especially fossil fuel-powered generators) by 60-75% on an average on a monthly basis. This has reduced noise and air pollution to its barest minimum, while lowering green house gases (GHG) emissions from electricity generation on ABUAD campus. Having inaugurated the 2.5Megawatts independent power project powered by Cabota Energy On 21st June, 2021, ABUAD, in 2022 has scaled-up production by at least 25% more than the 2021 production so as to provide more energy for the neighbouring community. In like manner, Carbon reduction and emission reduction process is important in to the health of Afe Babalola University. This is because the University owns a 400-bed, 10 Modular Theatre Multisystem Hospital which is one of the best health care centers in Africa, therefore the levels of pollutants in the air has to be reduced to ease the burden of the health care facilities as a life-saving center.

It is a popular knowledge that carbon emission can detrimentally affect the quality of life and lead to chronic health conditions and even premature death on the long run. The University runs a system which reduces carbon emissions by periodically in the following listed ways:
(i) Trees Planting: ABUAD can actually be nicknamed ‘WOODLAND’ as there is the continuous process of afforestation. In 2022, the ABUAD Clean and Tree Club has ensured that 500 units of trees were planted across the length and breath of the University which accounted for about 102% increase over the year 2021 trees planted. The presence of trees in every nook and crannies of the University does not only add aesthetics but more importantly absorbs and stores carbon dioxide. This goes a long way in reducing carbon emissions and harmful environmental impacts. The ABUAD Clean and Green Club which is an all inclusive Club that provides environmental services aimed at creating a sustainable environment on campus has been very supportive of increasing the number trees planted in the year 2022.
In like manner, in 2022, a 2022 Forest Management and Certification programme joint hosted by the University, Ekiti State Government and other organizations placed emphasis on re-afforestation and tree planting as a way of preserving the ecosystem from the challenges of climate change due that can be brought about by high carbon emission and green house gases (GHG) emissions. Sawmillers, farmers, students and the public were encouraged to engage in tree planting which can also bring about wealth creation training in 2022.
(ii) Transitioning to renewable energy sources: At present ABUAD runs on an Independent Power Plant which is fired by gas turbine, and also powers some of the electronic and electric powered devices with Solar and renewable energy from Coal, Ethanol etc. Researches groups and committees are working tirelessly on hybrid renewable energy sources for full transitioning according to the University Energy Conservation Policy and University Energy Utilities and Sustainability Plan Reviewed 2022..
Energy-and-Utilities-Sustainability-Master-Plan-Reviewed-2022(iii) Operating a driving efficient campus: ABUAD is a campus where peace and tranquility truly reigns. The enforcement of the rule where Students are not allowed to drive personal cars on campus and people are encouraged to take walks or ride bicycles as much as possible was strictly implemented in 2022. The architectural design of the University has provided a framework where most buildings are 2 mins work from one another. The colleges are maximum 3 mins work from the halls or residence. Where a means of transportation is necessary, colleges own buses and mini vans that uses non-fossil fuel are available for emergencies and other needs. The fewer the number of cars or vehicles the more the cut down on carbon emissions in the environment.
