ABUAD Green Campus Program cuts food waste by fifty percent

Campus food waste per person (N)

Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti (ABUAD) has recorded enormous progress in reducing food waste across the campus. Since the launch of the ABUAD Green Campus Initiative in 2016, which is periodically reviewed even up until 2020, campus food waste has reduced by 6 ounces per person (56 pounds per year per person) with an overall reduction in food waste of 65,000 pounds and 288,288 gallons of water, representing a fifty percent reduction in food waste at ABUAD.

The ABUAD Green Campus Initiative aims to promote eco-awareness through waste audits and lifestyle changes. In addition to tracking the patterns and causes of food waste across Campus, the University’s Commercial Ventures division, which manages retail, catering and event services on campus, provides healthier food and drink options on campus. The ABUAD Ventures has discontinued all-you-care-to-eat dining operations and introduced trayless dinning in all the student restaurants in order to minimize food waste. Similarly, restaurants across the university increased their food options as an incentive for food waste reduction.
