Campus food waste tracking (N)
Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti (ABUAD) has recorded enormous progress in tracking food waste across the campus. Since the launch of the ABUAD Green Campus Initiative in 2016, individual student tray waste tracking have been used to gather data on the volume of food wasted on campus and the reasons. As of 2020, the Initiative has tracked the waste from over 10,000 trays in an all-you-care-to-eat dining operations across the campus.
The tracking program shows that more than 60g edible food was disposed of per tray, accumulating to over 1.5 (1.36078 mt) tons of food waste per month and close to 20 tons (18.1437mt) per year.
By tracking the reason for throwing away food, the Initiative is able to monitor and correct the problem to prevent future food waste. By so doing, the Initiative continues to dramatically reduce overproduction, spoilage, expiration and campus food waste generated per person.
