Renovation and New Builds Policy for Energy Efficiency Standards

In line with its central commitment and mission to advance environmental responsibility, In 2022, ABUAD reviewed the policy to ensure that all new constructions, buildings, renovations, and facilities adhere to energy efficiency standards. It reemphasized the processes to manage energy and utility consumption across campus by implementing sustainable practices and procedures. This is to include the use of electricity, natural gas, and fuel oil for all campus buildings and utilities. In Afe Babalola University, reducing utility bills to the minimum is germane since the average cost incurred on electricity bill alone in 2022 is about thirty-five million naira monthly. The continuous improvement of energy efficiency of each and every building is therefore important. The Directorate of Projects and Works Department of the University has put proper structure and policy in place to:

(i) As of December 2022, metering all new and existing buildings (be it offices, students’ halls of residence, staff housing, auditoriums, commercial centers and so on) to measure and monitor energy consumption has been put in place.

(ii) Phase out high energy consumption lighting fittings in all existing buildings and use only LED lights fittings in new buildings. This has been proven to reduce each buildings energy usage by at least 70% in the year 2021 and further reduced to 88% in 2022.

(iii) In 2022, ABUAD continues to converts the university’s conventional streetlights and other occasionally used rooms like conference/seminar rooms to smart automatic control system LED Lighting . This has gone a long way to controlling the street lights intelligently and automatically to reduce energy consumption.

(iv) In 2022, ABUAD continues to ensure that a proper ventilation design is chosen to ensure good air quality and reduce eat and hence the energy needed for cooling.
